Becoming the Tallest Midget

John Beck is ready to start.

Beck, drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2007 out of BYU, started four games for Miami before being demoted to third string in 2008. After being released, he signed with the Ravens, who traded him to the Redskins last year.

So a guy playing for his third team in four years, who has only started four games in his NFL career, and they were for a 1-15 team, is ready to lead the Washington Redskins next year.

Maybe Beck leaves near the Beltway and is high off the exhaust, because the man is clearly delusional.

For his part, Mike Shanahan isn’t helping. He recently said that back in 2007, when Beck was drafted, he had him as the highest ranking QB coming out of college. Shanahan’s endorsement means he thought Beck was better than JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Kevin Kolb, Drew Stanton, and Troy Smith.

Other than Kevin Kolb, who is considered a quality NFL signal caller because there aren’t very many serviceable options out there, that isn’t exactly a who’s who of top QBs. Russell is out of football and Quinn isn’t good enough to play over Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow. Troy Smith played somewhat decent football when pressed into action for the 49ers, but maybe Alex Smith is so bad that he looked good by comparison, sort of like the tallest midget. Drew Stanton is a back up QB for the Lions, who has been sacked more times than he’s thrown touchdown passes.

While saying anyone is the best of a group is a compliment, shouldn’t Skins fans be a little worried that Beck is basically the 5 Piece Chicken Nugget on a Wendy’s Dollar Menu of NFL QBs?

Beck is saying, and by organizing unofficial team workouts, doing all the right things, but if I was a Redskins fan, I would be a bit troubled. If Beck is your opening day starter, you are trying to compete in the NFC East with a QB that Bill Parcells released in favor of Chad Henne.

If someone you really trusted, who always seemed to have an eye for talent and lemons alike, told you not to take Mindy to the Prom, and even took a one armed troll instead of being seen with Mindy at his side, would you be rushing to the phone to call Mindy? Telling everyone that Mindy is really quite a catch, and trying to talk your friends into the decision like the Celtics did with the Kendrick Perkins trade?

Well Mike Shanahan, would you?
